Description
The Shiba Inu originated in Japan. Recent DNA analysis confirms that this is one of the oldest dog breeds dating back to the 3rd century BC. The name Shiba Inu translates roughly to brushwood dog because the Shiba bush is where they hunt and the leaves turn a bright red, like their coats, in the fall. Inu is the Japanese word for dog. Life expectancy for this breed is 12-15 years. Other names used for this breed have been Japanese Shiba Inu, Japanese Small Size Dog and Shiba Ken. The Shiba is an independent thinker and should be socialized and trained at an early age. The double coat is thick and can be black and tan, red or red sesame which is red hairs with black tips. The AKC recognized the Shiba Inu in the Non-Sporting Group in 1992. The average size of this breed should be 13 to 16 inches tall at the withers with a weight of 17 to 23 pounds. Daily exercise is a must with this breed, not only for their physical health, but to burn off energy in general.
