Description
The Giant Schnauzer is simply a larger, stronger version of the standard Schnauzer. This breed was basically unheard of outside of Bavaria until the 1900s. In the 1930s the breeds high intelligence and loyalty was recognized by Germany where they were used as police and guard dogs. While the breed was imported into the United States in the 1960s it remained very rare for many more years. The Giant Schnauzers coat is dense, wiry and weather-resistant. This gives him protection from the harsh weather. The coat is solid black or salt and pepper and will require regular grooming including brushing and stripping so owners must plan on spending time maintaining this breeds coat. The AKC recognized this breed in the Working Group in 1930. This breed ranges in size from 23 1/2 to 27 ½ inches tall at the withers.
