The Pomeranian was named after historic Pomerania, now Germany. Originally this Nordic breed weighed 30+ pounds and pulled sleds, and herded sheep. Pomeranians come in a wide variety of colors and patterns but the most popular color is the red. The Pomeranian also excels in the show ring, as a therapy dog, and as a beloved companion. The AKC recognized this breed in 1888, in the Toy Group, and it is still a very popular breed today.
