Description
The Irish Wolfhound originated in Ireland, as the name implies. This sight hound is the tallest of all dog breeds, but not the heaviest. Their description often includes the phrase of great size and commanding appearance. An old Irish proverb describes the breed simply as Gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked. They should be fast enough to catch a wolf and strong enough to kill it too. They were such good hunters of wolves and Irish elk, that when the population of each dwindled in Ireland, the breed almost became extinct. Since that time this large muscular greyhound-like shaped breed has rebounded and now flourishes in many countries including the USA. The AKC recognized this breed in the Hound Group in 1807. Ideal size ranges from 30 to 34 inches tall at the withers.
