Description
Here in America, this breed is known as Bulldog, not English Bulldog. Originally, the Bulldog was bred for baiting bulls, then dog fighting in England, but when dog fighting was banned in England the breed was bred to have a loving, even tempered manner like we know it today. In spite of its tough guy appearance, this breed loves its family, especially children, endearing it even more to their lucky owners. Due to their short coat, they require minimal grooming, however, because of their short snout; they are prone to overheating in the summer so it is important they be provided a cool place to escape the heat. The AKC recognized the Bulldog in the Non-Sporting Group in 1886. This stocky breed can range in weight from 40 to 50 pounds and is an excellent family companion and guard dog.
