The smooth coat needs little grooming while the long coat needs brushing to avoid mats. These little fast moving, saucy terrier-type dogs are highly intelligent and in spite of their size should never be underestimated. The AKC recognized the breed in 1904, in the Toy Group. Chihuahua s should not weigh more than 6 pounds and while smaller Chihuahua s are called Tea Cups this term is not recognized by the AKC and is entirely a marketing ploy
