Description
The Siberian Husky originated off the eastern Siberian peninsula. Around 1908 this breed was used in the All-Alaskan sweepstakes, a dog sled race from Nome to Candle and back and used heavily in the Alaskan gold rush. In 1930 the last of the Siberians were exported from the Soviet Union as they closed the borders of Siberia to external trade. This same year the breed was recognized by the AKC and then nine years later in Canada. The nickname Husky is actually derived from the work ESKY which was used for the breed in reference to the Eskimos who used the breed. The Siberian Husky has a thicker, double coat than most breeds and sheds this coat heavily once or twice a year. Coloring of the coat can range from nearly all black, to nearly all white, and the same for red. This breed is smaller than most people think, ranging from 20 to 23 ½ inches tall at the withers and 35 to 60 pounds
