Description
The English Setter originated in England over 400 years ago and was an avid bird dog. Originally called the Setting Spaniel, the dog would find game and crouch down on its front legs, or set, which allowed the hunter to toss the net over the dog onto the prey. As rifles took over as the weapon of choice, the dog was bred to point instead. This breed can come in four distinct color patterns, all of which are feathered in with the white coat, called the Belton markings and they are orange, blue, tricolor and lemon or liver. The breeds temperament has been described as a Gentleman by Nature as they are as good in the home, with the family, as they are in the fields. The English Setter was one of the original 9 breeds recognized by the AKC, and for this breed, that was in 1884 in the Sporting Group. Their ideal size is 24 to 25 inches tall at the withers.
